The Good Vet & Pet Guide

The Good Vet & Pet Guide

A Complete Cat Rescue Checklist

Any effort to rescue a cat from neglect, abuse, or cruelty is a noble act. You deserve more than a pat on the back. We know it comes from the heart, and your desire to give the cat a better life is genuine.

But you may end up mistreating the cat if you are not well-prepared for the responsibility ahead. So we have prepared this checklist to help you prepare to give the cute furry friend a new and better life. Here’s what to do when you want to rescue a cat.

Choose whom to adopt from

Once you have decided to give a neglected or abused cat another chance at a good life, the next step is to know where to get one. There are several animal welfare organizations in the country. Here are some tips to help you zero in on good animal rescue organizations.

• They are transparent. They hold open events regularly and allow animal lovers to know and experience how they carry out their business firsthand.
• They have qualified staff with certificates to prove it.
• The rescued animals are not crumpled up in small spaces but have adequate room.
• They are always open, able, and ready to give information about the care needs of a particular animal.
• They screen people looking to adopt animals. They assess the circumstance and knowledge of a potential pet parent and advise on which animal is best and how to take care of the animal.
• They conduct pre and post-adoption visits to ensure the animal is in good care.
• They work closely with vets and other animal behavior experts.
• Their facilities have an exercise area, an infirmary, and a quarantine section.

Besides these, look at the reviews about the shelter from other cat lovers before deciding which organization is best.

Prepare for a visit to your home

After you have decided on the shelter, reached out, and began the process, brace yourself for a home visit by one of their staffers. It might be a little nerve-wracking, but it is a necessary and often cordial experience. They want to check out if your home has enough space and whether the environment is conducive for a cat.

Since you are looking forward to being a cat parent, you could prepare yourself and your home with some of these items:

• A pet flap on the door.
• A cat climbing tower.
• A litter box.
• A scratching pole or two.
• A cat bed or a cat cave.

Identify the cat and get to know each other

Now that your house is ready, prepare yourself for your new furry housemate. Talk with the shelter’s staff. Try to understand the cat, her personality, needs, and if she is an excellent match for you and your lifestyle.

Spend some time with the cat before the collection date. Learn more about what she likes, and see if you can establish a bond.

Collect your new furry baby and settle in

When you have a green light from the rescue facility, plan to collect the cat. Plan to carry from the shelter something that the cat will find familiar, like her blanket and a few toys.

When you get home, don’t be surprised to see the cat wary of her new environment. She might be timid, shy, or scared. She may hide under the sofa, spend lots of time somewhere high, or be naughty. Just be patient, and continue pouring lots of love and affection. Rescued cats may take a few days or weeks to get accustomed to new surroundings. She will eventually come around, and the experience is worth the wait.

Stock up your home

We have mentioned a few, but here are other essentials you should have ready.

• Plenty of cat food.
• A carry case.
• Cat toys
• A collar.

Our team can help you find a suitable vet, pet service, or product near your location.

Make the big decision: an indoor or outdoor cat?

The question as to whether cats should be indoor or outdoor pets is still a fiercely contested debate. It is entirely up to you and how you feel about your cat. Many cats will naturally want to explore their surroundings. They enjoy roaming around.

However, it is crucial to know the risks and benefits of unsupervised outdoor access. Plus, experts advise keeping rescue cats indoors for some time. If the cat enjoys life indoors, and you would like to keep it that way, make sure you feed her on the proper diet and allow her to exercise.

If your cat is the outdoor type, be aware of the issues that might come up and schedule regular vet checks for common health issues.

Rounding up

Rescuing a cat is a big decision to make. Giving a cat a second chance at having a decent life is a marvelous thing to do. The cat could be naughty, timid, shy, and many times a mystery.

So, be patient, willing to learn, and work hard at winning her over with plenty of love and affection. Keep checking this guide in case there’s a step or something you left out. After all, a prepared parent is a better pet parent.

Business Of The Month July 2021

Business Of the Month Badge

Client Reviews Received June 2021

Prevention is better than cure

I started both my dogs, cockapoo (10) and terrier cross (8) on Antinol because it contains PCSO-524 - to safeguard them as prevention is better than cure. I want to keep their joints as mobile as possible as they get older. My terrier cross is 8 and already had problems with his luxating patella.

He hasn't limped ever since we have started him on Antinol. Being proactive about making sure their joints stay healthy gives me peace of mind.

Antinol experience

I have noticed many differences in my dog since starting Antinol.

Her fur is incredibly soft. And she gets around much quicker and smoother than she did before.

She also doesn’t have loud farts anymore which is lovely.

My dog enjoys taking her capsules and always waits to see if she gets another too. I would definitely recommend trying your dogs on Antinol

Antinol Dogs put a new lease of life into Reggie!

Taking part in the 30 day trial for Antinol has been a great experience for our dog Reggie!

I love how the ingredients are all natural, they are a good size to disguise when giving to dogs and I have seen so many improvements already.

Reggie isn’t an unfit dog and likes walks, but never really tends to run around too much! But after 3 weeks of Antinol we really noticed a difference in his mobility and willingness to sprint around more.

I think it’s a great thing to have a dog ‘vitamin’ type product that will prolong mobility for the future, not just for mobility problems.

Walter- Retired Greyhound

Before adopting a retired racing dog, I had concerns around joint health and whether years of racing will have had a negative effect on his mobility.

Since adopting Walter (Age 4) in November 2020 I decided to be proactive in ensuring that we were looking after his joint health.

I started him on Antinol in April 2021 and have seen a difference in his mobility.

From running around the garden more rapidly, to jumping on the sofa with ease, Walter now no longer 'groans' when he sits down or collapses his legs. Not to mention, he takes his capsules mixed into his food with no issues at all.

Very impressed

Very impressed as a cat mummy of two older cats eldest being 15 years I've noticed such a difference in her mobility just watching her being able to pounce without discomfort is great.

I have complete peace of mind knowing it's helping her joints at such an old age.

Makes such a difference to my dog's mobility

Over the 4 week period, I have noticed a distinct improvement in my 14-year-old dog's mobility, particularly in the morning. He is less stiff in his back legs and seems much happier in himself.

The tablets are small and initially, I did hide them in his food or within a small amount of peanut butter as he has never taken any meds for me in the past.

However, he does take these directly as if it is a treat and without testing myself I have to assume they smell and taste good.

I highly recommend Antinol to pet owners and feel that it is a worthwhile supplement to invest in.

Loved it!

Nemo is a 2-year-old Lab and Irish Setter mix so he’s a super active boy. He doesn’t currently suffer from any mobility issues but we wanted to try Antinol to give his joints that extra protection for the future.

We loved how this is a 100% natural product and the tablets were super small making it easy for Nemo to take inside some snacks or even on their own.

Great product. Totally recommend it!

Less Creaky Dog

My boxer dog is 4 & I’d noticed it was taking him longer to get up after a sleep. He’d also slowed down when playing fetch so we did the 30-day trial.

My dog is definitely getting up quicker now, and he’s keeping up with my other dog when playing fetch, so I believe Antinol has done what it promised.

Antinol journey

Really good product. My dog Nala has been using Antinol for 1 month now. Her fur is incredibly soft, she gets around much quicker and easier.

And she isn’t farting half as much as she was before starting on her capsules. Sue really enjoys taking them and always looks super cute to try and get another one every day.

We will be continuing to use Antinol

Things to Consider Before Feeding Your Dog a Natural Diet

Eating a healthy and nutritious diet is something that we strive for. It is something we are taught from a young age. As soon as you understand the different food groups and their importance, you tend to make a conscious effort to eat foods that fall into these categories.

While this is important to remember when considering your own diet, it is also essential that you transfer this knowledge to the diet you give your pet. Naturally, there will be some differences in the nutrients that your dog needs comparing to yourself. Some things overlap, however.

The Basics

Ensuring your pet has the proper diet is critical for their growth and development. Not to mention, as a devoted pet parent, you must promote and protect their health while doing what you can to minimize the risk of disease and illness.

That is not to say you and your pet cannot have the odd treat. Life is all about balance, after all! Whether you choose to set aside specific days to have a treat or opt for healthier treats to give yourself and your pet, it is entirely up to you.

At the same time, you might be considering the possibility of introducing your dog to an organic or natural diet as a means of promoting a healthy lifestyle. Some pet parents choose to give their pets an organic diet to manage and maintain any health conditions that their pets might have.

Dogs with genetic or digestive issues may need particular food in their diets or might need to avoid them altogether. It can certainly be overwhelming when in this position!

If you are interested in finding out more about using this type of diet in your own home and what benefits it could have for your pup, read on for more! We feel confident there is something of value below.

Protein and Fat Balancing

Your dog gets their energy from three main food groups in its diet. Naturally, you want to ensure they are getting the right amount of energy to keep them going throughout the day, without them getting too filled with energy during the night when you are trying to rest!

It is estimated that your dog’s diet should include approximately between ten and twenty percent of fats. This includes any fats or oils that you might be adding to their meals before serving.

At the same time, you want to ensure that the protein content in your dog’s diet is high. Protein provides your pup with amino acids, which are an essential component in creating energy. Amino acids also contribute toward the creation of muscle tissue for your dog. Ensuring they are receiving the correct amount is critical for their development.

Naturally, raw meat and raw food provide your dog with a high number of natural proteins and fats. But this is not to say that you should not monitor how much they are eating. Fat contains a higher number of calories than that of protein. Without restricting the amount of fat that your dog is consuming, they could be at higher risk of overeating and gaining weight, becoming obese in the process.

There are products on the market tailored for promoting a high protein diet for your pup, which can be added to their meals before serving. Organic probiotics for dogs from companies like Native Pet promote healthy gut bacteria. You can rest assured any digestive issues your dog may have been experiencing previously will be minimized.

Calcium and Minerals

Dogs need a steady stream of calcium and minerals in their diet. Much like that of protein, calcium promotes growth and development. You must do your best to ensure that your pup is receiving the right amount.

It is estimated that calcium needs to make up around ten to fifteen percent of your dog’s overall diet. Naturally, this needs to be a bit higher if you have a puppy, for they are constantly growing and developing.

While your dog can get a certain level of calcium and minerals from eating purely raw meat and associated products, this is not a high enough calcium level to effectively prevent any bone or joint issues in your dog. Bones are an ideal way of tackling this issue.

Bones contain around sixty-five percent of the minerals that your dog needs to be healthy. Not to mention, giving your dog a bone is an ideal way of keeping them occupied too! One thing that should be discussed here is to always supervise your dog if they are to chew on an actual bone.

Ensure you are also giving your dog a raw bone, do not cook it beforehand. Cooking a bone causes it to dry out, making it more susceptible to getting jagged edges which could prove potentially fatal.

With chewing and scraping, bone fragments could come loose and get lodged in your dog’s digestive tract. Not something you want to face as a devoted pet parent. Artificial bones provide a welcome distraction for dogs of all shapes and sizes and promote the exercise and development of bones and joints.

You needn’t worry about bone fragments coming loose on these, either. These are harder and bigger bones, not designed to be eaten. They are designed with hours of gnawing in mind, perfect for keeping any troublesome pups out of harm's way and busy!

Much like that of protein, there are supplements on the market specifically designed for boosting the amount of calcium and magnesium your dog is consuming. Eggshell powder is a popular choice, although it does have less magnesium in it. It is, therefore, not recommended as a supplement for puppies.

Vegetables

Like us humans, dogs need a certain number of vegetables in their diets. Fruit and vegetables provide a high number of nutrients associated with promoting immune benefits. In other words, fruit and vegetables help boost our immune systems, something that has been incredibly important throughout the last year or so.

While that is very well the case, you must ensure you select fruit and vegetables for your pup, which will not do more harm than good. It is estimated that ten percent of your dog’s diet must be made up of vegetables, with it recommended that broccoli, kale, and blueberries as top choices.

Avoid high sugar fruit, opting for ones that are digestible by your pup. Fruit and vegetables in your dog’s diet promote high levels of Polyphenols, which are required for preventing and treating several diseases. Polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory properties, ideal if your dog has issues with any of its muscles and joints.

The right balance of nutrients in your dog’s diet promotes healthy gut bacteria and digestion. You needn’t worry about them being smelly!

While these are a handful of the essential things to consider when opting for a natural or organic diet for your pup, we hope it has shed some light on the intricate details. Naturally, the diet you choose to implement for your dog is entirely up to you while also tending to any individual needs that your dog might have.

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to finding the proper diet. What might work for someone else is not guaranteed to work for you. If you are unsure of what best to use for your pup, consider contacting your registered veterinarian for some advice and guidance.
