5 Essential Items for Travelling With Your Dog

Travels with My Hound

If you think traveling with a baby or small children in tow is stressful, try taking a trip with a dog! Like young children, our furry companions require you to bring along quite a few items to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for both of you.

Spark Paws have helpfully put together a few essential items when traveling with your dog.

Extra Lead & Collar

Your dog’s lead and collar are two of the easiest items to misplace, so always take a spare. Since you often change hands when attaching or releasing them from your dog, you usually end up placing the lead or the collar on the floor (or any surface) in the process. This often results in them being left behind so packing a spare collar and lead is a no-brainer.

Dog Treats & Waterbowls

Even if your dog is well-trained, being on holiday can sometimes make our dogs less than receptive to our commands. A handy supply of dog treats is the best way of ensuring that you have your dog's full attention.

Tasty treats can come in handy when there is no time to attach the lead or when you just simply need them to follow your instructions or distract them from engaging in unsafe or unwanted behavior.

In fact, dog treats, especially chewable ones, can even be used to soothe your dog when he or she becomes agitated from being in unfamiliar surroundings whilst on holiday.

If you are traveling in summer, always bring water and a bowl with you too as dogs need to hydrate as much as we do in hot weather. You can bring your dog's normal bowl if you wish but you may want to consider buying a portable travel bowl for holidays and days out. Travel bowls made of tough fabric can be folded in your pocket and taken out on walks. This allows you to hydrate your dog during the walk itself rather than waiting for when you return to base. They are a lot less cumbersome than the traditional metal or china varieties and can be acquired quite cheaply.

Dog Poop Bags

Unlike people, dogs usually go when they gotta go!

Unfortunately, they usually go in the most inconvenient of places, usually on the pavement directly in front of a family enjoying an al fresco meal at a restaurant!

You must always have dog poop bags to hand when out with your dog. This applies wherever you are and not just when you are on holiday. Don't be that person who never picks up their dog's poop. We owe it to fellow dog owners and other users of public spaces to ensure that we keep these areas clean and safe for everyone.

Grooming Gear

If your outing is planned to last longer than a day, you are advised to carry some grooming items for your dog just in case they take an unexpected fancy to that muddy ditch.

Having a couple of brushes to hand prevents your dog from forming unsightly mats on their coat as a result of all that rolling in mud as well as allowing you to remove potentially serious items from their coat or paws such as grass seeds or ticks. Adding a towel to your travel bag will also allow you to dry your dog and ensure that the furniture in your holiday retreat doesn't become ruined with you ending up receiving a bill for upholstery cleaning from the disgruntled owner.

Dog Clothes

We often forget that despite having their own fur coat, dogs feel the elements as much as we do. To provide an extra layer of protection for your dog against heat, cold, and rain while traveling, you should think about investing in a waterproof dog coat. There are loads of options available these days to suit all breeds and budgets. As well as keeping them dry, they also serve to keep the mud off their coats, making your life a lot easier and less expensive.
