Ask A Vet - 3ft Ball Python Eye caps are not coming off

3ft Ball Python - Eye Caps Are Not Coming Off - Any Suggestions?

Hi, I was hoping you could help me. I have recently rescued a 3ft Ball Python.

When I got her, she was in just a tank with a water bowl. No hide house, no basking light, no branches to climb; nothing. She has all that now and seems to be way more active.

The problem: when she came to me, she was starting to shed. It's coming off in pieces only, whereas my other two snakes shed all in one piece. My concern is her eyecaps. They are on there, and not coming off?
Do you have any suggestions? I've bath soaked her and kept her tank humidity up but still on there. Is mineral oil applied to the eye caps a good idea?

Thank you for any input you can give me.  Julie

Dear Julie, Don't put anything on them and don't try to pull the spectacles off.

Just keep bathing at least once a day and ensure that the husbandry is perfect. Make sure that you have a digital thermometer to check that temperatures are right and a hygrometer to check humidity levels.

If everything is right then the retained skin should come off with bathing alone, If it's not then you will need to take her to a vet to check for an underlying reason

Good luck.
