My dog will lick until he bleeds

JRT And A Bothersome Mole

I have a 12 yr old Jack Russell - he has a couple of moles that seem to bother him and he licks until it bleeds. What should I do?

Hi,  JRT with skin lumps – my advice would be to have them removed. Old dogs often get lumps and bumps and it is hard to tell what they are just from their appearance.

Sometimes I will advise owners to monitor them if they are reluctant for surgery, but if they are bothering him that much, then the only way of solving this problem is to take them away altogether. If they are quite small this shouldn’t be too much of a big deal if he is well otherwise.

Your vet will want to listen to his heart and lungs first, and they may advise on a pre-anesthetic blood test to check how his liver, kidneys, etc. are working before they anaesthetise him to be on the safe side.

Best wishes
