How Much Exercise Should A Dog With a Dodgy Heart Get?

My little 13yr old Sprocker has a dodgy heart, the valves let fluid into her lungs. Apart from a wander about the garden, going mad in the house with her toys, she doesn't get walked.

Her cough gets worse and she's out of breath quickly. How much exercise should she get?

Hi,  Little and often I think is the best amount of exercise for your dog, 10 minutes 3-4 times per day. The heart condition is going to greatly reduce her cardiac output, so she is not going to be able to cope with long walks even if she thinks she wants to go. However, doing no exercise at all may cause her to simply put on weight, so tailor it to how she copes.

If she gets very breathless you need to reduce how much she does. Is she on any medication at all? Many dogs with heart disease have a greater improved quality of life if put onto heart medication, so speak to you vet who can prescribe suitable ones

Best wishes
