Elderly Rescue with Dry Eye

I have recently taken on an elderly rescue cocker spaniel. He is suffering from a bit of dry eye and was wondering what to use?

Hi,  The best treatment is a drug called cyclosporine in the form of the licensed preparation ‘Optimmune’. It is expensive but well worth trying as the earlier you start treating the less likely you will get the chronic effects of dry-eye, such as recurrent infections and, at worse, blindness.

It is also quite painful for the dog. Lubricant eye drops will also help, but it is almost impossible to put them infrequently enough to make a real difference in the long term.

Treatment is life-long and occasionally some dogs become refractory to treatment, but I would speak to your vet who will help with monitoring your dog’s tear production.
