My dog drinks enormous amounts of water...

My dog is slowly dying I think. He drinks enormous amounts of water in which, of course, he pees a lot! We took him to the vet and she was puzzled. Three blood tests and a urinalysis. From the red/white blood cell, count and diabetes checked his kidneys.  He was given antibiotics for 10 days because bacteria was found in his urine.

Because he drinks so much water, only a small amount of bacteria was detected. He's high energy, his coat is beautifully shiny he eats 2 times a day and is on iams from birth. I tried probiotics and yogurt. I really don't know what to do and I don't have another 400.00 for more tests. Do you have any suggestions? He has had his needles and was neutered at 6months. He just had another revolution flea treatment this month.

Hi Dolores, You haven't said how old your dog is, but there many reasons why a dog will drink a lot. I'm afraid it sounds like he will need some further investigation. Maybe it's worth getting a second opinion or a referral to a medical specialist- they should be able to revisit the blood tests he has already had and may have some more ideas of where to go next.

Was he any better on the antibiotics? If he was maybe a longer course might help, but either way, you really do need to go back to your vet for some answers.

Best wishes
