WM Referrals – Lichfield

West Midlands Referrals is a veterinary practice based in Lichfield that only does referral veterinary work, not general practice. We work in support of colleagues in general practice, taking cases that can’t be managed at their usual general practice.

We welcome a very wide range of cases in orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, spinal surgery, ophthalmology, medicine and cardiology. These cases range from the straightforwards to the complex and challenging. Many of the practices that refer to us are within a few dozen miles, but we get referrals from as far afield as Southampton, Southend, Yorkshire, Merseyside and Bristol.

At Lichfield we have a purpose built suite to provide the comprehensive surgical treatment, patient monitoring and the diligent aftercare that referral cases require. For elective surgeries we offer a mobile surgical service in the Midlands and we offer a regular surgical service at a surgical facility in Dartford, London.

An experienced surgeon is available to advise on case management day or night, and we provide a high quality, efficient, friendly service. We pride ourselves on keeping costs firmly grounded in reality and in providing exceptionally good value. We aim to provide fixed prices wherever possible.

We communicate efficiently with the referring general practitioner, providing a written report and a care plan. We typically have cases checked over by their own vet a few days after surgery, and we then typically see cases back 2-3 post-operatively, and then subsequently as required. We don’t charge for our follow up checks or follow up radiography. Where repeat travelling to us is problematic, we can still give readily available support to both the owner and the referring vet with the help of modern communication technology.

Rupert - portosystemic shunt

We can’t thank West Midlands Referrals enough, our Miniature Dachshund, Rupert, was referred to them with a portosystemic liver shunt at only 9 weeks old, their prices were very reasonable compared to our local referral centre, but the love and care he received was outstanding and second to none. Rupert had emergency surgery at 17 weeks old, he was tiny and weighed just over 1kg, the odds of him pulling through we’re almost nonexistent but Jon and his team operated on him, the nurses sat in recovery with him all day and to everyone’s amazement he pulled though and has made a miraculous recovery. He is our little miracle! We can’t thank and recommend Jon and the team at West Midlands Referrals enough.

Excellent Caring Service

Our dog swallowed a fish hook which got caught in his throat. Both the emergency vet and our own vet had been unsuccessful in removing the hook. We were referred to WM Vet Referrals by our own Vet and couldn’t be happier with the outcome. They were very professional & caring and the cost of the procedure was exactly what was quoted with no hidden costs or extras. I would highly recommend them.

Charlie's knee operations

Our Springer Spaniel Charlie has had to have 3 operations on his left knee with West Midlands Referrals and the standard of care and customer service has been brilliant from day 1. Jon and Matteo in particular were fantastic but all of the staff at the practise are friendly and professional. I would highly recommend. Thank you for all of your help.

Sasha' ruptured cruciate ligament

Sasha ruptured her back right cruciate ligament last year and being a little dog (and 13.5 years old) it is not apparently an obvious decision to repair it, however 2 operations, some screws and an implant later she is walking and running as well as she ever did. She's a little hesitant to jump in the same way but that's very understandable ..... I'm just so delighted that all 4 legs are working again and she hasn't got to hop everywhere.
Jon and the team were wonderful, answered any and all questions, and explained Sasha's after care well, with follow ups to ensure her best recovery. I would definitely highly recommend Jon, his team and the practise.

Successful liver shunt repair

I haven't enough words to say how grateful we are to have such experts working to save our little shihtzu's life.
She became really poorly and was quickly diagnosed with a portosystemic liver shunt. After talking with vet Jon Mills the decision was made to operate on Tiana in avid to give her the best possible chance of a healthy life.
The opearation was a huge success albeit very hard to go through, but to see her now 4 months on, is just awesome.
Thankfully we were insured and the payment part was really easy but since speaking to others who have been through the same operation elsewhere we also realised that we were receiving top quality treatment at an affordable price. So insured or not we would have still gone ahead with the life changing operation.
The staff are all amazing and even had tissues on standby for when I broke down into tears.
I thoroughly recommend this practice to everyone with animals. My little one might not be here today without them.

Excellent service

When my dog became lame on his back leg in December 2016 I took him to your local vets and paid £503 for blood tests and X-rays. I was told that he needed specialist treatment and we were referred to West Midlands Referrals. We had excellent care from Matteo Armato the vet and submitted our claim form for Pet Plan.
We have trouble with Pet Plan as they refused the claim on the grounds that our dog was seen back in 2015 for a problem with his knee cap. They were claiming this was the same problem and therefore would not pay out. Matteo was excellent and contacted Pet Plan for us to explain this was a different injury and even spoke to the actual insurers involved. The end result was that Pet Plan paid out saving us over £2000. Our dog is now in excellent health all thanks to West Midlands Referrals.

Puppy Magic

I found J. rude used inappropriate language, and I was spoken to like a child, he showed no care or compassion towards me , as I was in bits or my dog .I was told to put my dog on the floor that I couldn't hold her, While she was on the floor she stood up on me on her hind legs, one badly fractured!! 'so I quickly picked her back up, being told she could not be picked up for 6 weeks, he then picked her up off me and walked carrying her into the back ? On return to collect her I was also passed her to me by some one holding her, after being picked up .?? ,Not being fully informed of the insurance details , Even though my insurer had told them on day one, they had not itemised every item, so they were short of paying out 144 pounds, I've had a most traumatic day dealing with my own vets, Lichfield Referals ect when it could have easily been avoided,if they had sent the paperwork asap to my insurer itemised,I have also paid the 2 lots of excess ,one to my vet has been taken,I also paid referals on leaving and after no phone call this afternoon,as promised to refund my excess ,this is now dragging into another day ,hoping for my much needed excess refunded to me as promised.Extremely stressful when this is the time you need support efficency and a vet that doesn't use terms like tits up. That is not professional! , HOWEVER Magic the surgeon who operated on my dog Magic! Was second to none.his manner was perfect, even though he spoke to my friend like Magic was her dog while practically ignoring me,until I told him Magic was my dog. After all I did breed her,was holding her lead blanket and the bill!! His surgery has probably saved my dogs leg .She badly fractured her knee, he said the operation went better than expected,I give the surgery 5 stars, she's doing so well, however I'm supposed to return for 2 check ups and I never want to set foot in the place again,I do not doubt their expertise in helping animals saving legs/lives ect,I just feel the whole thing could have run a whole lot smoother without the stress chasing up paper work, their job not mine ! They just especially Jon ego maniac need to work on their people skills ! Also good value for money !

Owner's reply

1) Relating to holding the pup / putting it on the floor of the consulting room:
If I asked an owner with a dog with a broken leg to place it on the floor, that would be because I was concerned about the pet jumping down and injuring itself further, or else because I was worried that the owner was holding it in such a way that its injured leg was being "scrunched up" which can be painful and cause further injury to soft tissues.
When we carry pets with such injuries, we do so with the injured leg away from the body and hanging free in extension to minimise pain and damage.
If a pet is put on the floor, it obviously can't then fall further, and it can position itself as it wants to maximise its comfort.
Getting an upset and stressed owner to concentrate on the fixation plan and the aftercare implications that they need to thoroughly understand can be a challenge sometimes. In this case I suspect that it would have been a much better idea if I'd taken the patient straight through to the kennels, and then come back and talked to the owner without the distraction of having the pup in the room.

2) Insurance:
Our policy for insurance is clearly explained at
http://www.wm-referrals.com/for-clients/insurance/
Unlike many referral practices, we allow do allow clients to cover their accounts with us with direct insurance claims to save them having to find all of the money at short notice up front. This pup had a fracture, an acute injury, and there will probably have been no time to do a preauthorisation of insurance cover. All we ask is that clients pay their insurance excess to us, and in the unlikely event that this isn't taken off our insurance claim, we then promise to refund them this sum promptly - within a few days.

3) Not realising who the owner was!
We get a wide range of friend and family groups coming into consult rooms with pets. It is often not immediately apparent who the owner is. I'm sure no offence was intended.

4) Use of "inappropriate language":
I'm sorry that the use of the phrase "tits-up" has offended the owner. I accept that this slang phrase is a little vulgar, but I would contend that it is not offensive phraseology, and certainly no offence was intended.

W.M.REF.

when it seemed like our own vets had given up wmref came to the rescue.Roger the ultrasound scan whizz kid instantly made us feel more relaxed and was very efficient,he clearly cares about both the animals and their owners. He discovered the problem and passed us on to jon 1 of the veterinary surgeons to perform erics op..He was a friendly ,down to earth kinda bloke and explained the op in plain english,so we felt more than comfortable to leave eric in his very capable hands. He even sent a picture message of eric after the op to show us how well he was doing (a nice touch we thought!!) unlike most dogs eric had to stay with them for a week or so due to a chest drain being fitted, jon however made sure that he kept in constant contact with updates even on his day off.He even arranged for us to visit as he knew how much we were missing him.talk about dedication to the job!!!! Eric is now home and doing well and its all due to roger, jon and the wonderfull team of careing staff at wmref.we cant thank you enough.Sarah and Dave W-ton.
